About Mabe Pearl

Every pearl starts as a grain of sand, but not every grain of sand can become a pearl. As a precious gem with a soulful touch, a pearl transforms from a dull piece of sand into a warm, glowing treasure. Inside the shell, it goes through the test of time and the washing of nature to be shaped perfectly. With its unique natural beauty and deep meaning, the pearl has also become an essential fashion element for modern women.

A one-in-a-million treasure from the ocean

Unlike round pearls that grow freely inside the shell, true Mabe pearls are 'half-round pearls' that grow against the inner shell wall over a very long time. Because they are extremely difficult to farm, and the survival and success rates of the shells are very low, Japanese Mabe pearls with a perfect shine and flawless surface have become an incredibly rare treasure for collectors.

The northern limit for Mabe pearls to survive

The penguin shells that grow Mabe pearls are only farmed in Amami Oshima, Japan. Located between Kyushu and Okinawa, Amami Oshima has a very special geographical location. It sits right between the tropical and temperate zones, with water temperatures staying between 19°C and 29°C all year round. It takes three to four years for a Japanese Mabe shell to grow to 20-30 cm. After adding the nucleus, it takes another two to three years to create a pearl. Therefore, it usually takes about six years in total, which is longer and riskier than farming Akoya round pearls. In the future, facing more extreme weather, the production will only drop significantly.
